If you are working on a busy construction site with uneven ground and overhead risks, boots are the safer choice. Understanding Safety Shoe Ratings

Safety footwear in the UK must meet EN ISO 20345. Within that standard, products carry a rating that tells you what level of protection they include. Here is what the main ratings mean.

  • SB is the base level. It requires a toe cap capable of withstanding 200 joules of impact and 15 kN of compression. That covers the minimum requirement for most warehouse and logistics roles, though many buyers opt for at least S1 to get additional features at little extra cost.
  • S1 adds antistatic properties, fuel resistance, and energy absorption at the heel on top of the SB requirements. These are useful across most indoor working environments and represent a meaningful step up from SB for most people.
  • S1P includes everything in S1 plus a penetration-resistant midsole. The midsole protects against sharp objects underfoot – nails, glass, metal fragments – making S1P the practical minimum for any environment where debris is a realistic risk. Most buyers in warehouse, logistics, and trade roles opt for S1P as a baseline.
  • S3 adds full water resistance and a penetration-resistant midsole. S3-rated shoes will keep your feet dry in wet conditions while providing the highest level of protection in the standard's main tier. They tend to be slightly heavier than S1P options but are worth considering if you move between indoor and outdoor environments during a shift.
  • ESD stands for electrostatic discharge protection. This is an additional rating for environments where static buildup could damage sensitive electronic components or create an ignition risk. ESD footwear provides a controlled path to ground, dissipating static charge rather than allowing it to build up. If you work in electronics manufacturing or assembly, ESD certification is not optional.
  • SRC refers to slip resistance at the highest level. To earn an SRC rating, footwear must pass both the SRA test (ceramic tile with detergent) and the SRB test (steel with glycerol). SRC is worth prioritising in catering, food production, or any environment with regularly wet or greasy floors.

Steel, Composite, or Aluminium Toe Cap?

The toe cap is the core protective feature in any safety shoe. There are three main materials used, each with trade-offs.

  • Steel is the traditional choice. It is heavy-duty and cost-effective, but it adds weight and conducts temperature – meaning your feet will feel the cold in winter and heat in summer. Steel also sets off metal detectors, which rules it out for airport workers and anyone in a secure facility.
  • Composite materials – typically fibreglass, carbon fibre, or Kevlar-based – offer comparable protection to steel at a lower weight. They do not conduct temperature, are non-metallic and therefore metal-detector friendly, and have become the default in most quality mid-range and above safety footwear. If you are in a security-sensitive environment or find steel-toe shoes uncomfortable over long shifts, a composite option is worth the modest price premium.
  • Aluminium sits between the two on weight and is found in several Apache models. It gives a slimmer profile than steel at the toe, which many wearers find more comfortable for long periods of standing and walking. Still metallic, so it will set off a detector.

  • Midsole penetration resistance – For anything beyond purely smooth, controlled indoor floors, an S1P or S3 rating with a penetration-resistant midsole is worth having. It only takes one shard of glass underfoot to cause a serious injury, and the midsole adds very little to the cost or weight of a shoe.
  • Slip resistance – The SRC rating is the benchmark for wet environments. If you are working in food production, a commercial kitchen, or any area where floors are regularly hosed down or covered in spillage, SRC should be near the top of your list.
  • Waterproofing – S3-rated shoes with waterproof uppers are worth considering if your role involves any time outdoors or in environments with standing water. A good waterproof shoe extends the working life of the footwear and keeps feet dry on those shifts where conditions are unpredictable.
  • Weight – This matters more than many buyers expect. Over an eight or ten-hour shift, an extra 100-200g per foot accumulates into real fatigue. Composite and aluminium toe caps, mesh uppers, and lightweight EVA midsoles all help. If comfort over long shifts is a priority, weight should be a factor in your shortlist.
